Active all around the globe, Alessandro Florio has released several albums as a leader, including the very recent “Controra Avenue,” soon to be released, recorded in Trio in New York with guest Troy Roberts. Previous works include “Back to the Blue Coast” (AlfaMusic/Egea 2020), “Roots Interchange” (2015), produced between Italy and the USA with Americans Pat Bianchi on Hammond organ and Carmen Intorre Jr. on drums, already the rhythm section of the legendary Pat Martino Trio.
After graduating from the “Civica Scuola di Jazz” in Milan, where he studied among others with Franco Cerri and Enrico Intra, Alessandro Florio soon began his concert activity in Italy, performing for a short period with Franco Cerri’s Guitar Ensemble and for four years with the Urban Jazz Trio, ensembles based on repertoires of original compositions.
Having moved to the Netherlands in 2008 to study at the Prince Claus Conservatorium where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in guitar, arranging, and composition, he later earned a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance, studying between the Netherlands and New York under the guidance of Freddie Bryant, Mark Whitfield, Peter Bernstein, Paul Bollenback, Ed Cherry, and Frank Wingold.
In 2013, during his Master’s studies, he was awarded a Jazz Performance Scholarship from the Prince Claus Conservatorium, Groningen (Netherlands).
Throughout his career he has had the opportunity to collaborate, record, and perform in Europe, the USA, and Asia with outstanding musicians, including Alex Sipiagin, Mark Gross, David Berkman, Freddie Bryant, Gene Jackson, Don Braden, Pat Bianchi, Carmen Intorre Jr., Jumaane Smith, Troy Roberts, Kyle Koehler, Greg Cohen, Bruce Williams, Fabrizio Bosso, Stefano Di Battista, Flavio Boltro, Gege’ Telesforo, Max Ionata, Daniele Scannapieco, Dario Deidda, Tullio De Piscopo, James Senese, Tony Esposito, Franco Cerri, Silvia Mezzanotte, Peppe Vessicchio, Marco Zurzolo, Ernesto Vitolo, Giovanni Amato, Stjepko Gut, Ernesto Aurignac 4tet, and many others.
He has performed both as a leader and as a sideman in Italy and abroad: USA, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Spain, Greece, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Switzerland, Indonesia, and Thailand.
In addition to the various albums under his own name, he has recorded as a sideman in dozens of different Italian and international jazz ensembles.
Since 2017 he has been the sole lead guitarist of “Un Orchestra per Pino Daniele,” together with the very members of the historic band of the Neapolitan guitarist (James Senese, Tullio De Piscopo, Tony Esposito, Ernesto Vitolo), collaborating occasionally in the bands of De Piscopo and Esposito.
He is the founder of “Jazz e Leadership collaborativa,” a course that has become a special class within the Master’s program of the prestigious MIP Politecnico di Milano, which explores the parallels between Jazz and corporate organizational structure, with the aim of disseminating and explaining the jazz language also in non-musical contexts.
Since 2017 he has been a Jazz Guitar professor at the Conservatories of Udine, Catanzaro, Matera, Cesena, and at the “G.F. Ghedini” Conservatory of Cuneo, where he is currently a tenured professor.
He was also a professor at the Conservatory of Pavia for the course he himself conceived and founded, “Theory in Practice,” based on the specific improvisation techniques of the great Barry Harris.
Alessandro Florio ha pubblicato in qualità di leader diversi album, tra cui il recentissimo “Controra Avenue” di imminente uscita, registrato a New York con guest Troy Roberts. I precedenti lavori annoverano “Back to the Blue Coast” (AlfaMusic/Egea 2020), “Roots Interchange” del 2015 (realizzato tra l’Italia e gli USA con gli americani Pat Bianchi all’hammond e Carmen Intorre Jr. alla batteria, gia’ sezione ritmica del leggendario Pat Martino Trio).
Dopo essersi diplomato alla “Civica Scuola di Jazz” di Milano studiando tra gli altri con Franco Cerri ed Enrico Intra, Alessandro Florio ha presto intrapreso l’attivita’ concertistica in Italia esibendosi per un breve periodo col Guitar Ensemble di Franco Cerri e per quattro anni con l’Urban Jazz Trio, formazioni basate su repertori di brani originali.
Trasferitosi in Olanda nel 2008 per studiare al Prince Claus Conservatorium (prestigioso conservatorio musicale jazz con corpo docente americano) dove ha ottenuto una laurea (Bachelor) in chitarra, arrangiamento e composizione, ha poi conseguito un Master in Jazz Performance studiando tra l’Olanda e New York sotto la guida di Freddie Bryant, Mark Whitfield, Peter Bernstein, Paul Bollenback, Ed Cherry, Frank Wingold.
Nel 2013 gli viene conferita durante gli studi del Master, una Borsa di Studio in Jazz Performance dal Prince Claus Conservatorium, Groningen (Paesi Bassi).
.Nella sua carriera ha avuto occasione di collaborare, registrare ed esibirsi in Europa, USA e in Asia con musicisti straordinari, tra questi Alex Sipiagin, Mark Gross, David Berkman, Freddie Bryant, Gene Jackson, Don Braden, Pat Bianchi, Carmen Intorre Jr, Jumaane Smith, Troy Roberts, Kyle Koehler, Greg Cohen, Bruce Williams, Fabrizio Bosso, Stefano Di Battista, Flavio Boltro, Gege’ Telesforo, Max Ionata, Daniele Scannapieco, Dario Deidda, Tullio De Piscopo, James Senese, Tony Esposito, Franco Cerri, Silvia Mezzanotte, Peppe Vessicchio, Marco Zurzolo, Ernesto Vitolo, Giovanni Amato, Stjepko Gut, Ernesto Aurignac 4tet e molti altri.
Si è esibito, sia in qualità di leader sia di sideman in Italia e sia all’estero: USA, Olanda,Belgio,Germania, Austria, Spagna, Grecia,Lettonia,Estonia,Lituania, Romania, Svizzera, Grecia, Indonesia e Thailandia.
Oltre ai vari dischi a suo nome ha registrato come sideman in decine di diverse formazioni jazz Italiane e internazionali.
E’ dal 2017 unico chitarrista solista di “Un Orchestra per Pino Daniele”, assieme ai membri stessi dello storico gruppo del chitarrista Napoletano (James Senese, Tullio De Piscopo, Tony Esposito, Ernesto Vitolo), collaborando saltuariamente nelle band di De Piscopo ed Esposito.
E’ fondatore di “Jazz e Leadership collaborativa”, corso entrato a far parte come come classe speciale presso il Master del prestigioso MIP del Politecnico di Milano, che tratta i parallelismi tra il Jazz e la struttura organizzativa dell’impresa, con l’intento di divulgare e spiegare anche in ambiti extramusicali il linguaggio jazzistico.
Dal 2017 è docente di Chitarra Jazz nei Conservatori di Udine, Catanzaro, Matera, Cesena e presso il Conservatorio “G.F.Ghedini” di Cuneo dove è attualmente professore di ruolo.
È stato inoltre docente presso il Conservatorio di Pavia del corso da lui stesso ideato e fondato “Theory in Practice”, basato sulle tecniche di improvvisazione specifiche del grande Barry Harris.
